Info
Ponerosteus (Olshevsky, 2000) = Procerosaurus (Fritsch, 1905 / Huene, 1902) Procerosaurus exogyrarum (Fritsch, 1878) n. comb. (type) = Iguanodon exogyrarum (Fritsch, 1878 emend. Chure & McIntosh, 1989) = Procerosaurus exogirarus (sic) (Brinkmann, 1988) Iguanodon exogirarum (Fritsch, 1878)
Inderterminant scrap. The species Iguanodon exogirarum is based on nondiagnostic material, probably but not even certainly dinosaurian, that Fritsch originally referred to the genus Iguanodon.
When Dollo expressed the opinion that the material was not referable to that genus, Fritsch gave it the new generic name Procerosaurus, unaware that von Huene had already used it three years earlier (see Excluded Taxa). Inasmuch as a replacement generic name is necessary, Ponerosteus is here proposed, meaning \\\"bad bone\\\" or \\\"poor bone,\\\" referring to the quality of the type specimen; the name was suggested by Ben Creisler (pers. comm.).
Fritsch used the trivial name exogirarum for his species, but since this derives from the generic name Exogyra, of a shell common to the type locality, he should have spelled it exogyrarum, as he and others have actually done, inadvertently, in subsequent works. The opportunity to correct this incorrect original spelling permanently is here taken. Reference of this genus and species to Ornithischia incertae sedis is very provisional.
