The specimen presumably derived from an aged individual, as almost all sutures are obiterated by fushion. Opening into the endocranial cavity from the region of the middle ear is an extensive chamber, the recessus interacusticus. Kurzanov concluded that I.medullaris was the sole member of the [Itemiridae], related to both the Tyrannosauridae and more closely to the Dromaeosauridae.
