The specimen was not found in Japan itself, but on southern Sakhalin Island, a region then under Japanese control. In 1945, at the end of WW II, all of Sakhalin Island came under the authority of the Soviet Union (now the Russian Federation) and the Japanese population was repatriated.
Nipponosaurus has to be regarded on the basis of the published material as non-diagnostic. It is based on a poorly preserved, incomplete skeleton of a juvenile hadrosaur, including fragments of the skull and much of the left hind limbs.
