Protohadros byrdi is a specialized taxon with an unusuallyenlarged and ventrally deflected muzzle.

Head (2001) considers Protohadros byrdi closer to the Hadrosauridae than to basal Iguanodontia on the basis of the closure of the paraquadrate foramen, the parrellel-sided form of the grooves for replacement teeth in the alveolar trough, and the broadening of the occlusal surface.
