Galton, P. M. (2001) reclassified Spondylosoma as a rauisuchid lacking as it does various key characters that are synamorphic for Dinosauriformes-Dinosauria these including “a sigmoid curve and epipophyses in the neck and a distally placed deltapectoral crest on the humerus” Synapomorphic dinosaurian characters (e.g., elongate pubis, at least three sacral vertebrae, dorsal vertebrae having accessory hyposphene-hypantrua articulations) seen in this genus are also found in rauisuchians, Galton also noted that certain features of the sacrum of S. Indicate that this genus could belong to the family Rauisuchidae

\\\"vertebral body\\\" Named to indicate some relatively long neck vertebrae distinct from those of any pseudosuchian or other thecodonts known to von Huene and indicating that animal had a small head.
