According to (Baird & Horner, 1979) Trachodon tripos is based on the caudal vertebra of an indeterminate Pliocene balaenopterid cetothere (whale) this idea has remained somewhat controversial.
USNM 7190 original name for the first duckbill dinosaur published by Cope (Proceedings of the Academy of Natural Sciences, Philadelphia, volume 21, page 192).
In 1875 Trachodon tripos was transferred to Hadrosaurus tripos by Cope.
The name \\\"Trachodon\\\", although synonymous with hadrosaurs, was subsequently restricted by J.B. Hatcher to ceratopsians from the Judith River Formation and is so the name \\\"Trachodon\\\" is a nomen dubium.
