[D] Bagaceratops rozhdestvenskyi [Su] [sG] [T]
Describer
Maryanska & Osmolska, 1975
Time
Cretaceous Late Campanian
Classification
Ornithischia Genasauria Cerapoda Marginocephalia Ceratopia Neoceratopia Bagaceratopidae
Diet
Herbivore
Fossilsite
Barun Goyot Formation, Red Beds of Khermeen Tsav, Omnogov, Mongolia
Info
Genus - Typespecies - Skull
5 complete skulls, 17 fragmentary skulls, postcranial skeletons, juvenile to adult
Named for its size: probably smaller in size than other protoceratopsids. Bagaceratops rozhdestvensky has a short snout and frill, an additional antorbital fenstra, and a prominent nasal horn core.
It seems possible that al of the basal ceratopian specimens from the Barun Goyot Formation perttain to a single species. The most appropriate name for that taxon is Bagaceratops rozhdestvenskyi. Breviceratops kozlowskii may be regarded as a junior synonym of Bagaceratops
Platyceratops tatarinovi along with Lamaceratops tereschenkoi, Bagaceratops rozhdestvenskyi, and Breviceratops kozlowskii are assigned to the family Bagaceratopidae fam. nov. characterized by the fused nasals; the presence of the nasal horn and large subnarial fenestrae posterior to the nares between the premaxilla, maxilla, and nasal; and, pro- bably, the development of undulating ornamentation on the surface of the egg shell. The main evolutionary stages of Asian neoceratopsians are discussed.
