Typespecies - Skull
Breviceratops (Kurzanov, 1990) > Breviceratops kozlowskii (Maryanska & Osmolska, 1975) = Protoceratops kozlowskii ? (Maryanska & Osmolska, 1975)
2 partial juvenile skulls
Protoceratops (and Breviceratops) retain premaxillary teeth all other neoceratopians have lost them. Breviceratops kozlowskii has a short and narrow snout, a large, deep antorbital fossa, and a short, flattened nasal horn.
It seems possible that al of the basal ceratopian specimens from the Barun Goyot Formation perttain to a single species. The most appropriate name for that taxon is Bagaceratops rozhdestvenskyi. Breviceratops may be regarded as a junior synonym of Bagaceratops.
Platyceratops tatarinovi along with Lamaceratops tereschenkoi, Bagaceratops rozhdestvenskyi, and Breviceratops kozlowskii are assigned to the family Bagaceratopidae fam. nov. characterized by the fused nasals; the presence of the nasal horn and large subnarial fenestrae posterior to the nares between the premaxilla, maxilla, and nasal; and, pro- bably, the development of undulating ornamentation on the surface of the egg shell. The main evolutionary stages of Asian neoceratopsians are discussed.
