This species of Late Jurassic ornithopod was named in 1909 by C.W. Gilmore in the Proceedings of the U.S. National Museum, volume 36, page 292, in 1909. This species is unusual in that, unlike other species of Camptosaurus this one is from the Lower Cretaceous Period. It is possible then, that this species may belong to a genus of iguanodontid (such as Iguanodon lakotaensis), instead of Camptosaurus.
The locality is near Buffalo Gap in South Dakota and the specimen was discovered in 1896 by N.H. Darton. The typematerial consists of a partial pelvis and several vertebrae from the Lakota Formation (Early Cretaceous, Barremian stage).
