Abstract
A titanosauriform dinosaur: Fukuititan nipponensis gen. et sp. nov. is erected based on the incomplete skeleton. It is characterized by elongated asymmetric tooth crown with a weak or absent labial groove and without lingual concavity; stalk-like epipophysis of cervical vertebra; the transverse width of the proximal end of the humerus approximately 32% of the humerus length; metacarpal longer, approximately 48% of the radius and the distal end of the ischia slightly expanded. It represents the first relatively complete titanosauriform skeleton found from Japan. The discovery of Fukuititan indicates that the diversity and geographical distribution of Titanosauriformes are much higher than the previous thought.
Holotype
FPDM-V8468 is an associated skeleton found in one small area of the Kitadani Dinosaur Quarry. The associated skeletal parts include three teeth (FPDM-V8468-1, FPDM-V8468-2, FPDM-V8468-3), two partial cervical neural arches (FPDM-V8468-4, FPDM-V8468-5), three distal caudal vertebrae (FPDM-V8468-6, FPDM-V8468-7, FPDM-V8468-8);a proximal end of the left scapula (FPDM-V8468-9, both humeri (FPDM-8468-10, FPDM-V8468-11) two nearly complete radii (FPDM-V8468-12, FPDM-V8468-13), a right metacarpal (FPDM-V8468-14), both Ischia (FPDM-V8468-15, FPDM-V8468-16), a partial right femur (FPDM-V8468-17), a partial right tibia (FPDM-V8468-18), one complete left fibula (FPDM-V8468-19), a pedal phalanx (FPDM-V8468-20) and other bone fragments.
Etymology
Fukuititan refers to the dinosaur found from Fukui Prefectural of Japan. The species name refers to Japan.
Diagnosis
A basal titanosauriform sharing the folowing characters: the asymmetric tooth crown elongated with a weak or absent labial groove and without lingual concavity; the epipophysis of the cervical vertebra developed and stalk-like; the transverse width of the proximal end of the humerus approximately 32% of the humerus length; metacarpal longer, approximately 48% of the radius; distal end of ths ischia sligthly expanded.
