Named for Mr. Gaston and Don Burge. holotype specimen: partial skeleton and skull, housed at (CEU) College of Eastern Utah Prehistoric Museum, Price, Utah other material: at least 3-4 additional skulls, many spines, and other fragmentary bones discovered: 1994. Jim Kirkland worked on the material, sponsored in part by a National Geographic Research Grant and by CEU.
Gaston, Schellenbach and Kirkland (2001) described the mounting of a skeleton of the type specie Gastonia burgei, the authors noted that there was enough material collected to reconstruct this dinsoaurs skeleton \\\\\\\"with a resonable degree of accuracy\\\\\\\". The material was collected from the Gaston Quarry and the nearby Dalton Wells Quarry in Grand County, Utah. Included were cast of the holotype and largest skull (CEUM 1307); cast of the largest postcranial elements (e.g., CEUM 1254, paratype scapula; CEUM 1238, paratype right scapulacoracoid; BYU VP136, humerus; CEUM 3565, crushed right ulna; CEUM 3514, crushed right radius; CEUM, paratype right ilium; CEUM 1371, right and left ilischia; CEUM 5060, right pubis; CEUM 3646, paratype right femur; scaled-up sculptures of smaller specimens (e.g., CEUM 1163, partial crushed syssacrum; BYU VP2080, scapulocoracoid; and cast reconstructions of missing bones based on similar specimens of related genera (e.g., Mymoorpelta, Nodosaurus, and Sauropelta). This mount resulted in an adult measuring 4.6 meter (over 15 ft) in length.
