Gauthier (1986) cladistically defined and diagnosed Colbert and Russell\'s (1969) term Deinonychosauria, including Dromaeosauridae and Troodontidae . Gauthier\'s definition was taxon based and so requires a stem-or node-based definition in the Phylogenetic system. It is appropriate to redifine Deinonychosauria as a stem-based taxon comprising all maniraptorians closer to Deinonychus than to birds; its sister taxon is Avialae.
