The Chinle Formation is an extensive sequence of sedimentary rocks that was deposited over much of what today is the Colorado Plateau during the Late Triassic (Carnian-Norian). Consisting primarily of a series of fluvial-floodplain deposits, the rivers that deposited Chinle sediments appear to have drained into a large lake in the middle of the basin, alocation that corresponds to present day southeastern Utah. Paleoclimatological studies suggest that Chinle climates were relatively humid and marked by a monsoonal weather pattern that produced striking seasonality.
