[F] Fruitland Formation - New Mexico - US
New Mexico - US
The Late Campanian (Judithian) Fruitland Formation was named by Bauer (1916) and is at least 170m thick. It is composed of a series of complexy interbedded channel sandstones, carbonaceous gray shales and siltsones, and coalbeds that can reach thickness of 9 m and extend laterally over several kilometers. In the north, the easily recognizable persistent brown-colored ribbon sandstones mark the top of the formation, whereas in the south the stratigraphically highest, thick (>1m) coal can be used as the formational contact (Hunt, 1992). The climate of the Fruitland Formation. was warm, humid, and seasonal based on the associated fossil leaf and fossil treering evidence. The upper Fruitland and lowermost Bisti Member of the overlying Kirtland Formation constitute one of two stratigraphic intervals containing vertebrate fossils in the Fruitland-Kirtland stratigraphic sequence, theother being the Naashoibito Member of the Kirtland Formation.
