Lying on top of the [Chinle Group] Chinle Formation over much of the western US is the Glen Canyon Group which consist of (except perhaps for its basal-most strata) Early Jurassic terrestrial formations outcrops in northern Arizona, parts of southeastern Utah and northwestern New Mexico.
It compromises the Wingate Sandstone, Moenave Formation, Kayenta Formation and Navajo Formation The first two are predominantly reddish eolian sandstones, the Kayenta Formation mainly alternates between a reddish \\\"sandy facies\\\"and a grey-blue \\\"silty facies\\\". The Navajo Formation is composed of white and red sandstones that form a caprock over much of the cliffs and plateaus of the region. Reptile bones are quite common in some portions of the group, especially the Moenave Formation and Kayenta Formation.
