[F] Huiquanpu Formation - Shanxi Province - China
Shanxi Province - China
The Huiquanou formation consists of seceral hundred metres of terrigenous sediments which were deposited in a high energy flvuvial environment. The formaton is made up of grey siltstones interbedded with red medium coarse grained sandstones. There is extensive cross bedding. The upper part of the formation has been extensively reworked and contains a number of early Tertiary volcanic intrusions. The contact of the formation with the overlying Tertiary volcanics represents a palaeoerosion surface. The intrusions and the absence of well preserved index fossils makes precise dating of the formation problematic. The Upper Cretaceous ags is based on the discovery of pliosaur material in the formation (Dong, Z.-M., pers comm)
