[F] Karoo sequence - South Africa
South Africa
The oldest Karoo fossils, dating back about 240 million years, are found around Sutherland, Laingsburg and Prince Albert in the south-west, while the youngest fossils, dating back to 190 million years ago, occur in the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains. The formation is largely unbroken so that the intricate evolutionary pathways followed by different animal groups through time can be more closely traced than in other fossil-bearing systems of rock strata. The Stormberg group is the Late Triassic part of the Karoo sequence and consists out of the Clarence Formation, Elliot Formation [Lower], Elliot Formation [Upper] and the [Molteno Formation].
