New Mexico - US

The Kirtland Formation is overlying the Late Campanian (Judithian) Fruitland Formation and is separated from the overlying Ojo Alamo Sandstone by a disconformity. The Kirtland Formation consist of the Bisti member, Hunter Wash member, Farmington member, De-na-zin, (all lower Kirtland fauna), and the Naashoinito member, (Alamo Wash local fauna). The Maastichtian age Kirtland Formation in the San Juan Basin of northwestern New Mexico, US was originally named by Bauer (1916) as the Kirtland Shale.

The lenticular paleochannels in the lower Kirtland Formation repersent moderately well-drained overbank environments with low to intermediate velocity, highly brained channels. The lower Kirtland Formation is intermediate in diversity and composition between the coastal plain fauna of the Fruitland Formation and the inland vertebrate upper Kirtland fauna. The distinctive purple mudstones of the Naashoibito member are separated from the underlying four members of the Kirtland in a nonconforming manner.
