This monotypic genus known by several reasonably complete dentaries was first described as Amphitherium broderipii by Owen, 1845. The name Amphilestes has generally been credited to Owen, who mentioned it conjecturally, and in passing, in his mongraph on Mesozoic mammals (Owen, 1871). His clear intent was to retain the species in Amhpitherium; the first formal referal to Amphilestes was by Lydekker, 1887 (see also Osborn, 1888)
