The Junggar Basin lies between the Altai and Tianshan Mountains in Xinjiang. The long, continental sequence of thick sandstones, mudstones, and clays, ranges from Late Permian to Late Cretaceous in age. Dinosaurbearing horizons include the Toutunhe Formation (Middle Jurassic) the Shishugou Formation (Late Jurassic), the Tugulu Group, Lianmugin Formation (Early Cretaceous) and the Wulungo Formation (Late Cretaceous). The Middle Jurassic deposits of the Junggar Basin in Xinjiang are known as the Wucaiwan Formation now considered a part of the Shishugou Formation which is composed of light grey sandstones. The environments were fluvial to deltaic.The Wucaiwan Formation is limited to the eastern part the Junggar Basin of Xinjiang.
