Info

Amphicoelias (Cope, 1877) > Amphicoelias altus (Cope, 1877) >> Amphicoelias fragillimus (Cope, 1878).

McIntosh sees "no reason not to consider Amphicoelias fragillimus a very large individual of Amphicoelias altus". (1998, Modern Geology 23:481-506).

An old story states that Amphicoelias fragillimus may have been the largest dinosaur. The estimated 2.7 m height of the dorsal that crumbled to dust shortly after excavation suggests a skeleton 58 m long, about 9.25 m at the highest point of the back, and with a body mass of 122,400 kg. Only a drawing remaind. Holotype: AMNH 5777. The species name, fragillimus, apparently reflects the fragility or delicateness of the specimen produced by the thinness of the numerous laminae as noted by Cope (1878b, p. 563).
